Kanatal is a beautiful and picturesque small village in Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand in wooden hills located on the Chamba-Mussoorie highway. It is a popular picnic spot for people residing in nearby areas. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and perched at an elevation of 8500 ft above sea level, this place offers a nature-rich experience to travellers due to the presence of rivers and green forests. The village’s name comes from Kanatal Lake, which once existed but is now no longer visible. Surkanda Devi Temple is the most popular tourist site among Kanatal’s many beautiful attractions. According to mythology, this is where the Hindu Goddess Sati’s head fell while Lord Shiva was dancing furiously, carrying the dead body of Devi Sati. As per Mythology, the places where different body parts of Devi Sati fell are known as ‘Shakti Peeth’, and Surkanda Devi Temple is one of them. It is one of the sacred places where Devi Sati’s head fell while Lord Shiva was dancing furiously with the dead body of his better half. The Ganga Dussehra festival is celebrated with sheer zeal and excitement at the holy temple every May and June. | |
