MDR test for TB | |
MDR stands for multidrug-resistant, and in the context of tuberculosis (TB), MDR-TB refers to strains of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria that are resistant to at least two of the most effective first-line anti-TB drugs, namely isoniazid and rifampicin. MDR-TB is a significant concern as it poses challenges to TB treatment and control efforts. To diagnose MDR-TB, specialized laboratory tests are conducted to determine the drug susceptibility of the tuberculosis bacteria. The most common test used for this purpose is called drug susceptibility testing (DST), which helps identify the specific drugs to which the TB bacteria are resistant. | |
