The National Exit Test (NEXT) embodies a universally acknowledged principle – there can be no compromise on quality standards within the medical profession. Evidently, corruption had become rampant within the 88-year-old Medical Council of India (MCI). There was substantial evidence indicating that officials were engaging in illegitimate activities in collaboration with political figures at various levels. Additionally, there existed a lack of consistency in the process of inducting new members into the medical community. In essence, while foreign medical graduates were required to undergo the MCI Screening Test, doctors graduating from Indian Medical Universities were exempt. Moreover, it was widely recognized that the quality of medical education varied significantly across the globe. Notably, substantial differences were observed between the quality of education provided in government and private institutions, as highlighted by numerous surveys. Furthermore, there was a notable absence of quality assessments for a significant portion of the medical workforce entering the Indian healthcare sector. Following extensive deliberations by the Government of India (GOI), the National Medical Commission Bill was enacted on September 25, 2020. This led to the dissolution of the MCI and the establishment of the National Medical Commission in its stead. A pivotal step taken by the NMC was the introduction of the National Exit Test (NEXT), replacing the MCI Screening Test. v | |
